New research from Green.com.au reveals that 67% of house renters lack access to solar panels, leaving them locked out of savings during Australia's cost of living crisis. The government's Solar Sharer scheme offers relief for those unable to install their own systems.
The Solar Sharer scheme, launching July 2026 in NSW, south-east Queensland and South Australia, allows all households to access zero-cost grid power between 11am and 2pm. The government plans to extend the offer to other jurisdictions by 2027.
Green.com.au's research shows stark disparities: only 33% of house renters have solar panels compared with 56% of owner-occupiers. However, the fact that one-third of rental properties do have solar suggests landlords are recognizing the value of rooftop installations.
The research also reveals that 46% of landlords believe their fellow landlords should install solar on rental properties. With solar customers enjoying 18% lower bills on average, properties with panels become more attractive to cost-conscious renters.
Australia's 4.2 million solar households generate abundant midday energy, creating perfect conditions for the grid to distribute zero-cost power.
Dave Green, founder of Green.com.au, says: "This scheme helps renters access some solar benefits, but the real opportunity is combining rooftop solar with these free power periods. Households with solar can generate their own power all day, then tap into free grid power during the 11am-2pm window. Add a battery to store that free energy, and you've created the ultimate cost-saving setup."
The scheme requires only a smart meter, which most retailers install free. Renters can maximize savings by shifting dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, and device charging to the 11am-2pm window.
Green adds: "Three hours of free power shows what's possible when we harness Australia's solar abundance. It's a reminder that we're sitting on the solution to energy affordability, we just need more rooftops generating it."
